Scartar

It was the scar on my wife’s leg from a bicycle crash, which prompted the creation of Scartar. It was a road-rash type scar that tends to linger a long time. I finally said, “I know I have something growing outside that can heal that”. I cut some healing herbs, stuffed them in a jar with olive oil, set it on a windowsill, and steeped it for a month. I strained it, mixed it with a little melted raw beeswax, and Viola! The first batch of Scartar was born. I pasted a little bit on every night and every morning, and no one was more surprised than me when, four months later I couldn’t find the scar any more. It was gone.

For the next three years, I played with the recipe, studying different oils, and their impact on healing and nourishing the skin. I studied scars and how they are treated, planted more herbs, and learned different combinations that heal faster than just a single herb. And I learned just how to put it all together. Finally, in 2001, we released Scartar to the public through the Farmers Markets.

It was an immediate success. It was clear from the beginning that almost everyone had a scar or wound, or knew someone close who did. And it was also clear that the remedies for sale or recommended by doctors weren’t working very well. The people who bought the Scartar from us were the same people who bought from us every week, so we could see the results on a weekly basis. People loved it because it worked.

The reasons it works so well are simple: First, the fourteen herbs are all healing herbs. They work together to heal, and it’s their combined power that sets the Scartar apart from other products. Second, the three oils combined are vastly superior to using single oil. Jojoba oil, wheat germ oil, and sunflower oil all work together to nourish and enrich your skin while the herbs do their job of healing. Third, the Shea butter we add is the ultimate moisturizer. Gathered from the nuts of the Shea butter tree, it’s a sustainable, environmentally safe, non-petroleum based cream that keeps the scar or wound moist and supple while the herbs and oils do their work. And fourth, we add raw, unfiltered beeswax, not just because it’s the one of the best and oldest ingredients to use on your skin. We use it because it makes Scartar waterproof. You can’t wash off Scartar. You can’t sweat it off, swim it off, or wipe it off. Once you apply it, your skin absorbs it, and won’t come off until your skin sloughs it off with all your outer layers of skin cells.
